ILSSA It's About Time originated as an exhibition at Colorado College in March 2014. In early 2014 a 28-page letterpress printed workbook was sent to all ILSSA members, inviting each member to reflect upon her/his relationship with time. In March, workbooks were returned and exhibited in the Coburn Gallery, inviting perusal by the public.
In 2015, the It's About Time show will be installed atPRESS in North Adams, MA. And: the first weekend of the show we'll be producing a limited edition publication with Publication Studio in residence at the Williams College Museum of Art. All ILSSAmembers who participated in the show will receive a copy. More soon!

Time. What is it? How do you save it? How do you spend it? Can you make more of it?
ILSSA It's About Time: A Workbook for the Working Person, asks these questions and 24 more. In return, the questions are visually and verbally explored by 50 participating members of Impractical Labor in Service of the Speculative Arts (ILSSA), an organization for makers who use obsolete technology in conceptual or experimental ways. The completed workbooks comprise the exhibition, ILSSA It's About Time, which opening on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Colorado College.
The workbook was written, designed, handset, and letterpress printed by Local 719 Shop NLP (Aaron Cohick, New Lights Press) and the ILSSA Co-Operators (Local 347 Shop FS Bridget Elmer and myself) in order to be shared with the 100 current members of the ILSSA Union. ILSSA, or Impractical Labor in Service of the Speculative Arts, is a socially engaged art project consisting of a Union and a Research Institute. Founded in 2008, ILSSA is an ongoing and evolving publishing and social practice platform committed to investigating the value of labor. This workbook is the most recent in a series of projects that ask members to reflect upon their process, and to share this reflection with the public.

MoRUS Opening -- A Moment's Catalog December 8, 2012

For the second half of 2013, I worked closely with writer/editor Ben Shepard and publisher Marc Herbst of Journal of Aesthetics & Protest to produce a limited edition book for New York's Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS). The book is "an ode; a short book about activist New York under Hurricane Sandy and a re-telling of the eventual opening of MORUS on December 8 2012." Letterpress printed cover, hand-sewn binding, insides b/w photocopied on paper of multiplesizes. I completed 150 copies of the book in early December, just in time for the museum's one year anniversary. By January, it was nearly ouf of print! Interested in checking it out yourself? A few copies remain over at Temporary Services' mostexcellent Half Letter Press.

ILSSA Convergence & exhibitions at CCCD, Asheville BookWorks, & Harvest Records
In July 2013, ILSSA converged for the first time in Asheville NC. The busy schedule included: an Impractically Asheville walking tour; an analogue film screening by Mechanical Eye Microcinema; an exhibition of the State of the ILSSA Union at Asheville BookWorks; an exhibition of members' photocopied hands and tools at Harvest Records; and the first meeting of the ILSSA Working Group at The Center for Craft, Creativity, & Design;and a shared observance of the annual Festival to Plead for Skills on July 7. The ILSSA Working Group was the first meeting of members of ILSSA, and will be shared in an upcoming publications. Members addressed issues raised the the State of the ILSSA Union, discussing art, craft, time, work, and money, among other things. The result of the meeting is the basis of an exhibition on display at CCCD from July 6 - July 24, 2013.
